about

This one falls under the "Prodigals" category as well. The melody had been in my head since we began recording "Every Bubble in the Deep Blue Sea", and if the lyrics had come to me sooner, it probably would have ended up on that CD. I waited 4 years to realize the song was about a sailor with a fear of water who has fallen in love with a siren (or a kid at a pool party who's afraid to play a game of Marco Polo, but wants to impress the girl he's got a crush on).

Some friends and family of the band came into the studio to sing in the choir part that comes in toward the 3 minute mark. Many thanks to those good folks, as well as Kyle Swartzwelder, who contributed the mandolin track for this one.

lyrics

My life flashed in front of my eyes
I curse the moon for its effect on the tides
And you, my Slue-foot Sue
"There be dragons in these waters" tells the captain to his crew

So I close my eyes and hold my nose
And I try to hold my breath
Let's swim back to the shallow end
'Cause I'm in over my head and I know it

My love lies over the sea
But I can hear her singing siren songs to me
So I keep my head up high as I sink in
Even Marco Polo never learned to swim

Even Marco Polo never learned to swim
